Other Leadership Styles

‘A leadership style describes a leader’s behaviour when he/she tries to influence others’ (Rowe and Guerrero 2011). There are different styles of leadership that leaders can adopt, for example there is Directing, Supporting, and Delegating.

A Directive leadership style, would mean that the leader would focus on getting the job done and not consider communication or supportive behaviour, whatever communication is made it is solely to give instructions for the subordinates and nothing else. ‘The communication effort is one way and emphasises instructions that give subordinates direction about what to do and how to do it’ (Rowe and Guerrero 2011). Coach Carter does use this style of leadership, as he makes them sign a contract to adhere to certain rules and if they cannot accept and sign the contract they cannot stay in the team. This is why the character Cruz had to leave the team because he did not want to accept the rules.

Supporting Leadership Style is when the leader is supportive but is not very directive. This is where the subordinates have more control over the day to day activities but there is support available if it is needed. Coach Carter does not adopt this kind of leadership style because he is directive in the way he approaches the players. However that does not mean he does not support the team as he does offer support to Cruz after his cousin gets shot and decides to re-join the team.

Northouse suggests that the Delegating Leadership style is described as ‘low direction and low support’ (Rowe and Guerrero 2011). This style involves the leader agreeing with the subordinates and then letting them carry on with their duties then ‘relying on them to come up with the desired result’ (Rowe and Guerrero 2011). This is a style that coincides with the character of Coach Carter as he has set rules and guidelines for the players. If they do not want to follow the rules then they must leave the team.

Along with these three there is also another style of leadership and that is called the ‘Coaching Approach’ (Northouse 2013). This is a more directive style of leadership as well as being directive it is also supportive, it is about reaching the goals of the team and also looking out for the ‘socio economic’ needs of the team. This style relates to Coach Carters style of leadership the most because along with being directive and telling the team members what they had to do, he was also very supportive to all the members and was there for them all.
